The Maayama-li Dress was designed by First Nations designer Julie Shaw and made in collaboration with Indigenous weavers of Bula’bula Art Centre in remote Arnhem Land. A couture-inspired piece, the bodice was made using plant materials harvested from Country, using ancient traditional weaving techniques of the Yolngu people. The skirt section was made from deadstock fabric, using couture draping techniques by seamstress/draper Alice Cliff. This dress is a celebration of artisans coming together to achieve a creative vision, and representing the intersection of high fashion and Indigenous design.
The Indigenous Fashion Commission was initiated by Shonae Hobson and commissioned by National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) with support from Krystyna Campbell-Pretty AM.
